David James (DJ) Hooks 78, of Whiteville died Monday, February 19, 2018 at Tabor Commons, Tabor City, NC. He was born June 16, 1939 in Columbus County, the son of the late Hilton Wade Hooks and Ila Jane Evers Hooks.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Lena Mills Hooks and also Frances Hinson Hooks; grandsons, Justin A. Stempinski and Daniel Parnell; brothers, Carl (Buddy) Hooks, Stanley Hooks; sisters, Louise Todd and Virginia Simmons.
He was a member of Mt. Olive Freewill Baptist Church. He retired from the Federal Paper Board. He graduated from Hallsboro High School in 1957.
He is survived by a son, David Hooks and wife, Cheryl of Nakina; five daughters, Annette Lee and husband, Marty of Whiteville, Beverly Parnell and husband, Frank of Whiteville, Diane Sibbett of Nakina, Lisa Hayes and fiancé, Doug of Shallotte, Kathy Stempinski and husband, Marti of Round Lake Park, IL; a step-daughter, Susan Stockton and husband, Steve of Lafayette, LA; sister, Eleanor Heustess of Newport News, VA; brothers, Marshall Hooks and wife, Shelvy of Hallsboro, Burvin Hooks and wife, Ann of Hallsboro, Tommy Hooks and wife, Linda of Chadbourn; grandchildren, Joseph Stempinski, Tyler Stempinski, Taylor Stempinski, Christopher Hooks, Dillion Hooks, Haley Sibbett, Madison Sibbett, Tiffany Hooks Keel, Bradley Hooks, Robert Rhue, Jr., Curtis Rhue, Michael Bianchini, Samantha Rhue Small, Cody Lee, Wesley Stockton, Chuck Stockton, Todd Parnell, Dillon Parnell; great grandchildren, Conner Hooks, Langston Keel, Teegan Parnell, Jude Parnell, Elijah Parnell, Coston Hooks, Casten Hooks, Easton Keel, Addison Small, Layla Rhue, Camden Rhue, Sydney Hardin, Lyra Parnell, Justin Bianchini, Sadryne Jacobs, Raelyn Jacobs, Braxton White, Jaxton White, and Taylor Stempinski, Jr.
His funeral service will be at 11:00 am Thursday, February 22, 2018 at Peacock Funeral Home Chapel by Rev. David Kelly. Burial will be in Flynn Cemetery. His family will receive friends 6:30-8:30 pm Wednesday, February 21, 2018 at Peacock Funeral Home.
