James Moss, Sr. Obituary

James Oyston Moss, Sr., 78 of Whiteville, passed on Wednesday, September 12, 2018 at
Brunswick Cove Living Center in Winnabow after losing his battle with lung cancer. He
was born May 1, 1940 in Columbus County, the son of the late Charlie O. Moss and
Jessie Cribb Moss.
He was preceded in the death by his son, James O. Moss, Jr. and sister, Clara Moss
Formyduval both lived in Whiteville.
Mr. Moss grew up working at his parents’ business Moss’ Grocery & Gas in the White
Marsh community. In early adulthood, he worked at G.V. Singletary and Sons, National
Spinning, and Georgia-Pacific, all in Columbus County, before going into the
construction field, working for years with Dupont, Daniels, BE&K and other construction
companies. One such job was that of working on the construction of Columbus County
Hospital, now known as Columbus Regional Healthcare System. He loved working on
cars and later became owner/operator of Moss’ Backhoe Service, as well as other
ventures.
He is survived by two daughters, Debra Moss Powell and husband, Paul of Whiteville and
Angela Moss Baldwin of Hallsboro; a son, Charles Darwin Moss and wife, Tammy of
Whiteville. He is also survived by eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, in
addition to two sisters, Doris Moss Priest of Lake Waccamaw and Diane Moss Carteret of
Ocean Isle Beach. He was formerly married to Betty Arp Moss of Whiteville.
Our family would like to thank the staff of Brunswick Cove Living Center and also the
staff of Community Home Care & Hospice for the care and treatment that our dad
received. A special thank you to Haywood and Penny for the extra time and compassion
that they gave our dad.
A Celebration of Life will be held at the home of Charles Darwin and Tammy Moss on
October 13, 2018 from 2pm until 8pm.
