Larry Newsome

Larry Elwood Newsome, Sr. age 76 of Elon, NC went home to be with the Lord in Greensboro, NC on January 8th, 2019. He was born August 19, 1942 in Lumberton, NC at old Thompson General Hospital downtown, the son of the late Clifford Elwood Newsome of South Whiteville and Eunice Blye Norris of Clarendon. Larry attended Whiteville Elementary and High School (WHS class of 1962), while he also attended Jr. High in New Hanover county from 1953 - 1956. Larry is survived by his one brother, Gary Keith Newsom of Chocowinity, NC and his two half brothers Everett D. Lewis and Mark Lewis both of Southern California. Larry’s Grandmother May Lovenia Sidbury Newsome raised his brother Gary and he in South Whiteville. A veteran of the USAF, he was stationed at Barksdale AFB,  near Shreveport, LA from 1964-1968. It was there that he met and married Evelyn Carol Madden from Princeton, LA - his wife of 53 years. Larry is survived by his wife, Carol and his four children; Corey Len, Casey Ann, Cheney Elizabeth and Larry Jr (“Lenny” and wife Catherine). He is also survived by six grandchildren: Benjamin Block, Cyle Altice, Caleb Altice, Caitlyn Newsome, Collin Newsome, Christian Newsome.

After military service Larry worked as a City Policeman in Shreveport, LA before moving to Charlotte, NC. There he worked as a campus Policeman at UNC-Charlotte as well as United Parcel Service. In Charlotte, he found a niche with United Airlines and started his career in 1969. While with United Airlines, he lived and worked in many different cities around the country including; Charlotte, Atlanta, Chicago, Denver, Honolulu, Washington D.C., Omaha, Fort Lauderdale and Orlando. Larry retired in Orlando in 2002 after nearly 34 years of employment. In retirement and longing to return “home” to NC, he moved to Alamance County near Chapel Hill where he worked as a Transit Operator for Chapel Hill Transit from 2006-2009. Larry then moved to the Myrtle Beach area from 2011 - 2015, before returning to Alamance and finally settling in Elon.

As a child, Larry was a member of First Baptist Church Whiteville while growing up there. He became Born-Again Christian believer in October 1972 while living in Atlanta, Ga. There he and his family attended Atlanta Baptist Church in College Park, Ga. From 1972 on, Larry boldly proclaimed the Gospel of Jesus Christ to anyone he encountered. He loved to travel visiting Europe and the Middle East, including trips to Germany, Switzerland and Italy. He also made four trips each to England and Israel.

His funeral service will be 2:00 pm Sunday, January 13, 2019 at Peacock Funeral Home Chapel. The family will receive friends 4:00-6:00 pm Saturday, January 12, 2019 at Peacock Funeral Home.  Burial will follow in the Whiteville Memorial Cemetery.
