Sgt John William Mathews RET, 77, of Whiteville, died Sunday, September 8, 2019 at West Bladen Assisted Living. He was born December 18, 1941 in Valdosta, GA the son of the late John Malcolm Mathews and Maria Price.
Sgt Mathews served in the United States Army for 21 years as a tactical communications system operator/82nd Airborne Paratrooper and later the first recruiter in Columbus County. After his retirement from the military, he started his own electrical business. John is well known for repairing sewing machines in Columbus and surrounding counties. He was also retired from Columbus Correctional Institution. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church, New Hanover County VFW and past member of the Masonic Lodge in Wilmington.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Ralph Malcolm Mathews.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Martha Westbrook Mathews of the home; son, Thomas William Mathews and wife, Belinda of Clarendon; daughter, Sharon Renee Mathews of Tuscon, AZ; grandchildren, Akin Keith Ezzell and Lillian Brooke Ezzell.
His Funeral service with military honors will be conducted 2:00 pm Friday, September 13, 2019 at Calvary Baptist Church by Rev. Kenny Barnes.
The family will receive friends 6:00-8:00 pm Thursday, September 12, 2019 at Peacock Funeral Home.
