Betty Williams Skipper Jackson passed away April 11, 2024 at Shoreland retirement home. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and sister. Betty was born February 12, 1926 in Columbus County. She was the daughter of the late Thomas and Maggie Williams. She was happily married to the late Clifton Skipper, who died in 1972, and James McRae Jackson, who passed away in 1999.
Betty fondly remembered a childhood of roller skating, playing basketball and dancing the Jitterbug. She was known for her inner and outer beauty, having won two beauty pageants in her younger years. In her later years she enjoyed traveling, doing yard work at her home in Whiteville, Lake Waccamaw and Ocean Isle. She enjoyed playing bridge with friends that she held dear, having been in the same bridge club for 63 years. Betty graduated from Acme Delco High School in 1943 and furthered her education at Duke University with the class of 1947. She received her BS degree in education from Pembroke State University. Betty taught for 30 years as an elementary school teacher. She retired from Whiteville City Schools in 1979 and touched the lives of thousands of students during her career. Many of her students remained her friends for life. Her life revolved around her church, her family, and friends. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Whiteville, Gleaners Sunday School class, Reaching Out Group, and Retired Teachers Organization.
Betty is survived by her children: Dickson Skipper (Nancee) of Mint Hill, NC and Tammy Jackson (Bruce Lillie) of Charlotte, NC; Her grandchildren: Stuart, Jack, McRae, Aaron, Molly, Micah, Caleb, Joshua and Katie. She has 8 great grandchildren.
A celebration of life will take place July 27, 2024 at 11:00 a.m.at First Baptist Church in Whiteville, North Carolina. In leu of flowers please make memorials to First Baptist Church, 412 N Madison St, Whiteville, NC 28472 or the charity of your choice.
