Carl Ward Obituary

Carl Hugh Ward was born and raised in Nakina, NC where he graduated from Whiteville High School. He attended NC State University for two years and then enlisted in the Army during the Korean War. He served in the military for 2 years before returning to NC State to complete his degree in Agriculture Education. He lived in Lynchburg, VA for 7 years and loved spending time with family and friends at Smith Mountain Lake. In 1977 he opened Ward’s Equipment in South Boston, VA and was the President of the Virginia Farm Equipment Dealers Association and farmed tobacco for 20+ years. He enjoyed watching NASCAR races on the weekends and attended the Daytona 500 annually. He was also a supporter of the 4H Junior Livestock program of Halifax County, VA.

In 2000, he moved back to Nakina, NC and during the next 20 years, he enjoyed gardening, traveling, and was very active at Happy Home Baptist Church. He was extremely supportive of his 3 grandchildren and attended many, many extracurricular endeavors. Carl was very proud of his veteran status and looked forward to the Nakina Veteran’s Day parade every year. His love of family get-togethers even led him to commission construction of a custom set of bleachers painted NCSU red where the family gathered annually to watch an N.C. State football game, which the Wards affectionately deemed “Family Football.”

He is survived by his son, Carl Hugh Ward Jr.(Tracy) of Ocean Isle Beach; two daughters, Betsy Ward Roop (Lee) of Apex and Christina Ward Rogers (Jason) of Nakina; a sister, Marian Ward Smith of Greenville; grandchildren, Jack Ward (Rachel) of Pittsboro, Charlotte and Molly Roop of Apex. He was preceded in death by his parents, Carl Hobart Ward and Jewel Ross Ward; wife Madeline Brown Ward and wife Anne Bateman Ward; daughter, Julie Ward Brady; two sisters, Esther Ward Smith and Nell Ward Agee.

His funeral service will be held Sunday November 5, 2023 at 3:30pm at Happy Home Baptist Church in Nakina, NC. Rev. Richard Collins will be officiating. The family will receive friends an hour prior at 2:30pm.
