Mrs. Carol Jean Cates Coleman, 78, of Currie, NC, passed away on Monday, February 12, 2024. Jean was born on August 19th, 1945, the oldest daughter of the late Marion R. and Nellie Merritt Cates of Hillsborough North Carolina. Jean was a Registered Nurse who spent most of her career working to help those injured on the job. She never met a stranger and was always willing to lend a helping hand to those in need. Jean is survived by her children, C. Jeremy Hall (Karen) of Eugene, Oregon, and Elizabeth D. Payne (Daniel) of Lynchburg, Virginia. Jean is also survived by her grandchildren, John Cooper and Caroline Harrison Payne of Lynchburg, Virginia; a sister, Hilda Holloway (Sterling) of Durham, North Carolina and a sister-in-law, Jerrie Cates of Kings Mountain, North Carolina; as well as many nieces and nephews. Jean is preceded in death by her husband, Steve M. Coleman; her older brothers, Harry Cates of Kings Mountain, North Carolina and Joe Cates (Sue) of Hillsborough, North Carolina and Steve's extended family.
