Cayden Ray Callihan Obituary

Private First Class Cayden Ray Callihan, beloved son and devoted soldier, went to be with our Lord and Savior on January 31, 2026, just two days after celebrating his 18th birthday. Cayden was born on January 29, 2008, and in his short but powerful life, he left an imprint of love, faith, and light that will never fade.

Cayden graduated with honors from Tarheel Challenge Academy, a milestone that reflected his determination, discipline, and drive to better himself. Very shortly after graduating, at just 17 years old, Cayden answered the call to serve his country and enlisted in the United States Army.

Cayden proudly served on active duty as an Infantryman (SAW Gunner) with 3rd Brigade, 10th Mountain Division, 2nd Battalion, 30th Infantry Regiment, Charlie Company, 3rd Platoon, stationed at Fort Polk, Louisiana. His brothers in uniform described him as “the light in the darkness.” No matter the circumstances, Cayden carried a smile that lifted those around him and reminded others why they served.

He was fearless and loyal, stubborn yet gentle, protective and deeply caring. Cayden had a natural way of taking care of everyone he loved—and even those who simply crossed his path. He was one of a kind and outspoken, full of life, humor, and a contagious joy that drew people to him.

Cayden loved being a Soldier. He also loved playing video games—especially Fortnite and Call of Duty—and treasured the freedom that came with his first car. More than anything, he loved home and the people in it. Those closest to him shared a constant reminder of that love, often saying, “I love you to the moon and back times infinity.”

Cayden’s faith in Christ was important to him and continued to grow with him. His spiritual journey was visible not only in his words, but in the way he lived, loved, and carried himself. As his parents, we find peace knowing he now rests fully in the presence of the Lord.

Cayden is survived by his parents, Anna and John Blackwelder, who loved him beyond measure, supported him with unwavering devotion, and stood proudly beside him in every season of his life; his brothers, Seth Blackwelder, Izaak Blackwelder, and Jason Blackwelder; his girlfriend, Bayleigh Davis; and his biological father, Johnathan Callihan.

He is also survived by his grandparents Candace and John Bernheisel, Laura and Michael O’Connor, William Efird, Nancy and Johnny Callihan, and Gayle and Eddie Melvin; his aunts and uncles Wayne “Uncle TT” Efird, Angella Efird, Jennifer Efird, Dillon Bernheisel, Amy and PJ Busque, Heather and Ken Gregory (and their son Finn Gregory), Robbie and Virginia Teachey, Rusty Teachey, Kimberly and Bob King, Steven Callihan, Robin Callihan, Jonnie Griffis, Sherry and Michael Hair, Junior Callihan and Becky Callihan; along with countless cousins and extended family too numerous to name.

Cayden is also survived and lovingly remembered by his brothers of 3rd Brigade, 10th Mountain Division, 2nd Battalion, 30th Infantry Regiment, whose bond with him will last far beyond this life.

He was preceded in death by his great-grandfather Alfred Teachey and his great-grandmother Barbara Rhan.

A graveside service with full military honors will be held on Tuesday, February 10, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. at Greenlawn Memorial Cemetery in Wilmington, North Carolina. Family and friends will be received on Monday, February 9, 2026, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Peacock Funeral Home in Whiteville, North Carolina. We welcome everyone to attend.

The family humbly asks for continued prayers during this time of grief.
