Mr. Clarence Martin Benton, 87, of Whiteville passed away on Sunday, November 20, 2022 in Novant New Hanover Regional Medical Center. He was born July 2, 1935 in Columbus County, the son of the late Clarence Poe Benton and Lenora Madge Grissom Benton.
He was a lifetime member of Western Prong Baptist Church. His place of service was found in his love of music and talented tenor voice using them to sing in the choir for more than 70 years. He also formerly served as congregational leader, choir director, deacon and Sunday School teacher. He was a founder and member of the North Whiteville Volunteer Fire Department for over 22 years. He was a retired farmer.
He is survived by, son-in-law, Chris Smith of Whiteville; a son, Perry Benton and wife, Lisa of Bladenboro; two daughters, Bobbie Benton Clemmons and husband, Michael of Whiteville and Gennie Benton Parnell and husband, Mike of Whiteville; a sister, Bertie Lanehart and husband, James of Whiteville; eight grandchildren, Matt Smith, Morgan Smith, Adrian Robertson, Jackie Blackmon, Reid Benton, Bryce Parnell, Matt Hill and Mason Hill; and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Yvonne Fowler Benton; a daughter, Billie Benton Smith and a brother, Rufus Carey Benton.
Funeral service will be conducted 2:00 pm Monday, November 28, 2022 at Western Prong Baptist Church by Rev. Ronnie Wilson. Visitation will be one hour prior to service (1:00 pm) at the church.
