Estelle Etheridge

Mrs. Winnie Estelle Holt Etheridge, 89, passed away Friday, September 14, 2018 at Lower Cape Fear Hospice in Whiteville after an extended illness.

She was born August 22, 1929 in Conway, SC.  She was the daughter of the late John Leo Holt, Sr. and Rena Lera Hardwick.  She owned and operated a small gas station and grocery store in Wananish for over 30 years until her retirement.  She was a resident of Lake Waccamaw, NC for 70 years.

She was a member of Union Chapel Baptist Church.  Mrs. Etheridge was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Walter Edison Etheridge, her sisters, Josephine H. Bellamy, Betty H. Bessant, and Lou Ellen H. Marlowe; brothers, O’Neal Holt and John Leo Holt, Jr.

She is survived by her daughter, Louise Sellers (Jerry), sons John Etheridge (Kathy) both of Clarendon, NC and Walt Etheridge (Charlie) of Lake Waccamaw; granddaughters, Kim Gonzales of Bolivia, NC and Rebecca Etheridge of Greenville, NC; grandsons, Lt. Richard Hathaway, USN, of Denton, TX and Dustin Etheridge of Brooklyn, NY;  great grandsons, Nate and Noah; brothers, James Holt of Thomasville,  NC and Spivey Holt of Conway, SC;  many loving nieces and nephews, and a special brother-in-law, Carlyle Marlowe of Conway, SC.

She loved to cook and was an avid baker.  She is probably best known for her 13 layer chocolate cakes.  She also loved growing her various flowers and caring for her hummingbirds.  They always arrived early in spring at her home and continued to late in the fall.

Pallbearers will be David Hooks, Bob Powell, Louie Nye, Jerry Bullard, Richard Green, and Mike Mills.  Honorary pallbearers will be Joe Faulk and Carlyle Marlowe.

Services will be conducted at 2:00 pm Thursday, September 27, 2018 at Peacock Funeral Home Chapel by Rev. Terry Green and Rev. Mack Hudson.  Burial will be in the Lake Waccamaw Hillcrest Cemetery.

Her family will receive friends 6:00 – 8:00 pm Wednesday, September 26, 2018 at Peacock Funeral Home.
