Ethelene Sellers Smith of the Sellers Town community, Whiteville passed on May 4, 2026.  

Ethelene was born December 19, 1942, along with her twin and closest friend Maxine, to Arthalia and William “Pink” Sellers.  Ethelene graduated from Whiteville High School and received her Bachelors of Library Science and English from East Carolina University in 1965.  She served as librarian at Williams Township School for thirty years, where she inspired her students to become life long readers.  

Ethelene married James Arnold Smith on March 24, 1967 and they raised two daughters in their home in the Sellers Town community, surrounded by Ethelene’s close family members. 

After retirement, Ethelene continued to stay busy, keeping an immaculate home and a meticulously landscaped yard, and growing a bountiful garden.  She was a devoted member of New Hope Baptist Church, and spent many years serving as literature coordinator there, as well as faithfully attending her Sunday school class, the Ruth Searchers. Ethelene was blessed to have many dear friends, including her treasured friend Patsy Hinson, that she met through New Hope. 

Ethelene became a grandmother, Mimi, in October 2007, and doted on her two grandchildren, Callie and Ella.  She was so proud of them and their accomplishments, and spending time with them brought her immense joy.

Ethelene is survived by her husband of 59 years, Arnold Smith, daughters Tanya Argo (Patrick) and Crystal Bright (James), two beautiful grandchildren, her loving sister Maxine Hottel (Everson) and niece Jenny Hottel, her beloved aunt Retha Thompson, and many nephews and nieces.  Donations may be made to Lower Cape Fear Angel house, 206 Warrior Trail Rd Whiteville, NC 28472 and New Hope Baptist Church, 252 Rough and Ready Rd Whiteville NC, 28472.

Her graveside service will be held at 3:00 pm on Friday, May 8, 2026 at Peacocks Columbus Memorial Park with Rev. David Butler officiating.
