Frances Nesbit Barefoot, 90, of St. Johns, Florida passed away Friday, January 7, 2022 at the Palm Garden Health and Rehabilitation Center of Jacksonville, Florida.
She was born on May 26th, 1931 in Salisbury, Rowan County, North Carolina and graduated from New Hanover High School in Wilmington, North Carolina in 1949. She was the daughter of the late Charles Lindsey Nesbit Sr. and Eva Pence Nesbit. She was the widow of the late Willie James Barefoot (1970).
As well as a homemaker and loving mother, she was employed outside the home as a Nurse’s assistant at Columbus County Memorial Hospital and retired in 1996 after 10 years of service. Frances was also active in various civic organizations and was Secretary for the Town and Country Garden club for many years. She loved making her home and yard beautiful and her favorite flower was any and all types of roses.
Frances loved her church family and was an active member of Trinity Baptist Church. She was involved with Women On Missions and volunteered to serve the Homebound and residents of the Rest Home. She also helped teach young readers at Whiteville Primary School. In 1963, she traveled 75 miles a day every other week transporting challenged children to their first class at New Hope School. For many years she was the secretary for the local association for the Mentally challenged.
She is survived by a sister, Faye Menius; sons, Ricky J. ( Katie) Barefoot of Newport News, Virginia, Terry L. Barefoot of St. Johns ,Florida, Alan D.( Sharon) Barefoot of Salisbury, North Carolina; daughter, Brenda J.Harley and John Wester (fiancee’) of St. Johns Florida. Grandchildren Travis ( Ashley) Barefoot of Mills River, North Carolina and Austin Barefoot of Greensboro, North Carolina and all her nieces and nephews whom she loved dearly.
She is preceded in death by one brother Charles L Nesbit Jr. and sister-in-law, Joyce Nesbit of High Point, NC ,and brother-in-law Tommy Menius of Salisbury N.C.
In lieu of flowers, the family ask that you make a gift to any charity or church of your choosing in Ms. Barefoot's name.
Memorial services will be held Monday, January 24, 2022 at 11:00 AM in Peacocks Funeral Home Chapel, Whiteville, North Carolina with Rev. Randy Speight.
The family will receive friends and family one hour prior to the service in the funeral home.
