Gail Worrell Townsend 76, of Whiteville passed on Monday, October 23, 2023 in Columbus Regional Healthcare.  She was born July 22, 1947 in Columbus County, the daughter of the late, Marvin Worrell and Nellie High Worrell.

Gail was a graduate of Coker College and received a Bachelor's degree in Education.  She taught in the Columbus County and Whiteville School systems and Waccamaw Academy for over 35 years.  She was  National Board Certified in Education. She attended Smyrna Baptist church where she served as a Sunday School teacher and pianist.

She is survived by her husband of 54 years, C. G. Townsend; three sons, Matt Townsend of Whiteville, Alex Townsend and wife, Anna of Myrtle Be., SC, Nick Townsend and wife, Abbey of Morehead City, NC ; grandchildren, Lawson, Griffin, Grady, Hadley and Harriet Townsend; a  brother, Jimmy Worrell and wife, Gaye, of Greenville, NC; a sister, Sheila Dorsett of Raleigh, NC.

She was preceded in death by a grandson, Matthew Townsend Jr.

Her memorial service will be at 2:00 pm Saturday, October 28, 2023 a Peacock Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Willard McPherson officiating. 

Her family will receive friends Saturday at 1:30 pm prior to her service in the Chapel.
