Hollis Salyer, Jr. Obituary

Hollis Salyer, Jr. passed away on Thursday, March 5, 2020 at his home after a 19 year battle with Kidney Cancer.  He fought a courageous battle, undergoing numerous surgeries and treatments.  Through all the ups and downs of this fight, he never lost his sense of humor, his desire to help other people going through cancer and his belief in his heavenly father.

He was born in Grundy, Virginia July 23, 1945 to Hollis and Ample Salyer.  He was a graduate of Steed College in Tennessee with a BS in accounting.  His career was spent in Hospital Administration.  He served as Regional Controller for a group of hospitals owned or managed by Roanoke Memorial in Roanoke, VA.  Because of his love for the beach and fishing he moved to Whiteville to become the CFO of Columbus Regional Hospital until he was diagnosed with cancer.  He was active in the Kiwanis Club until moving to the beach two years ago.  He was a member of First Baptist Church in Whiteville for many years serving in numerous committees and as a Deacon.  He later attended First Presbyterian Church in Whiteville before his move to the beach.  After the move, when his health permitted, he attended First Baptist Church of North Myrtle Beach.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Jane Griffith Salyer; sons, Dr. Tracy Salyer  and wife, Sherry,  Chris Salyer and wife, Stacey; four grandchildren, the pride and joy of his life, Ramey Salyer, Nate Salyer, Boone Salyer and Hawkins Salyer; brother, Bill Salyer  and wife, Patty; sister-in-law, Margie Salyer and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Hollis and Ample Salyer and a brother, Ronald
Salyer.

The family would like to thank our friends that have been with us thru this entire struggle, our wonderful neighbors in Cypress Village for all the support, food and encouragement.  A special thanks to Levine Cancer Institute in Charlotte, NC and especially Dr. Amin (Oncologist at Levine) who never gave up on Hollis.  He was always trying to find new trials and medication for him.  Thank you, Dr. Hodgson for always being there when we needed you.  A special thank you to Seacoast McLeod Hospice for their loving care and understanding and Home Care of Myrtle Beach for the love you showed us thru the last days and the wonderful care you gave Hollis.

His memorial service will be 7:00 pm Thursday, March 12, 2020 at First Presbyterian Church Whiteville, NC by Dr. Ron Hinson and Rev. Kerry Peeler.

His family will receive friends 5:30-6:45 pm prior to the memorial service at First Presbyterian Church, Whiteville.

A second memorial will be held 11:00 am Saturday, March 14, 2020 at Forest Hill Memorial Garden 19415 Lee Hwy Abingdon, VA 24210 by Dr. Roger Gilbert.
