Larry Jerome Van Dyke Obituary

Larry Jerome Van Dyke, 69, passed away on April 13, 2026, in Forest City, North Carolina.

Born on June 21, 1956, in Los Angeles CA, Larry lived a life marked by service, dedication, and love for his family and community. A proud graduate of Hunter Huss High School and Gaston College, Larry went on to serve his country with distinction in the United States Navy. During his military career, he earned numerous honors, including the Navy Expeditionary Medal, National Defense Ribbon, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, First Good Conduct Award, and Antarctic Service Medal. His work with aviation teams took him around the globe—a journey he cherished deeply.

Larry’s commitment to service extended beyond his military career. He was a dedicated volunteer firefighter with the Tryonota Volunteer Fire Department in Bessemer City, North Carolina. His contributions to the department reflected his unwavering desire to help others and give back to his community. In his younger years, Larry found joy in singing with the choir at First Assembly of God in Gastonia. Music and faith were important parts of his life during that time. At his best, Larry was a loving and kind individual who prioritized being there for his children.

Larry is survived by his daughter Kelly Morgan; son Cody Michael Van Dyke (Rachel) and grandchildren Maverick and Millie; stepson Jesse Kenneth Clark (Courtney) and grandchildren Ava and Wyatt; nephews Justin and Josh Van Dyke; and sister-in-law Arlita Van Dyke. He also maintained a warm friendship with his ex-wife Patricia Senter (Tony). Special recognition is given to wife Cathy Van Dyke, for her aid in Larry’s final days—God bless her for the parts she played in his final years.

He was preceded in death by his parents Luther Joe Van Dyke and Sonja Gaye Van Dyke; brother Joel Van Dyke; grandmother Rosie Mae McSwain; and second wife Cynthia Morgan Van Dyke.

Larry’s memory will live on through those who knew him as a devoted father, a loyal friend, and a man who served both his country and community with pride. May his legacy bring comfort to all who loved him.  Kelly’s career has afforded her close connections to her VA community in her town, and they are eager to help her honor her father in a manor he would be proud of.

His memorial service will be held at 11:00 am on Friday, May 22, 2026 at Veterans Memorial Park located at 6354 James B. White Hwy S, Whiteville NC 28472.
