Leon Harris Thompson, 85, of Whiteville, entered eternal rest on Thursday, Dec. 8 after an extended illness. He was born to the late Herbert and Ina Baldwin Thompson on Feb. 26, 1937 and was raised on the family farm in “Thompson Town” on the outskirts of Whiteville. After graduating from Whiteville High School, he entered the Army National Guard. He worked on the family farm and also at Federal Paper Board Co. in Rieglewood. In 1965, he married Betty F. Capps. As they raised their two daughters, Leon worked at United Carolina Bank and then owned and operated Central Supply Co. He retired after working for the Department of Transportation. In his twilight years, he was a devoted caregiver for his wife. He was a member of New Hope Baptist Church.
Leon is survived by his wife; daughter Suzanne Clemenz (Brent) of Lafayette, Ind.; daughter Jennifer Thompson (Nathan Guinn) of Raleigh; and three grandsons: Quinn, Lucas, and Aidan Clemenz. He was preceded in death by his brother, Irvin B. Thompson, and his sister, Wanda Thompson Meares.
A celebration of life will be held at 2pm Wednesday, Dec. 14 at Peacock Funeral Home, officiated by Rev. Darrin Moore, with visitation one hour prior to the service. Interment with military honors in the New Hope Baptist Church Cemetery will follow the service.
