W. Mitchell Barnes, age 98, of Lake Waccamaw, NC died Sunday March 19, 2023 in the Lower Cape Fear LifeCare’s Angel House in Whiteville, NC. He was born August 22, 1924 in Robeson County, NC to the late Norwood and Annie Carter Barnes and the widower of Grace “Chick” Williams Barnes.

He is survived by his son, Jerry Barnes and wife, Tannis of Wilmington; two daughters, Elaine Speight and husband, Richard of Lake Waccamaw, Ginger Munching and husband, Aaron of  Holden Beach; grandchildren, Amber Barnes, Jeremy Barnes, Susan Watson and husband, Travis, Kathryn Hollis and husband, Patrick, Christina Greene and husband, Jimmy, A.J. Munching and wife, Paige, Matthew Munching and wife, Jackie; great grandchildren, Parker Hollis, Kylea Bollinger, Oliver Bollinger, Saylor Munching, Maddyn Munching, Hazel Greene, Bryar Greene and Loralye Greene; brother N.A Barnes and wife, Judy of Mount Airy.

In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Theda Mae”Sissy” Lamb and brothers, Russell L. Barnes and David “Tommy” Barnes.

Mitchell was a long time member of First Baptist Church Lake Waccamaw. He was a veteran of the United States Navy having served during World War II.

His visitation will be held Wednesday, March 22, 2023 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM in the Peacock Funeral Home.

His funeral service will be held Thursday, March 23, 2023 at 11:00 AM in the First Baptist Church of Lake Waccamaw with Reverend Matthew Tarpley officiating. His burial will follow the funeral in the Lake Waccamaw Hillcrest Cemetery.
